I am in a personal funk about the lack of knowledge there is regarding “Cannabis”—not only in the general population but in the medical profession. The active constituents in the Cannabis family are primarily stuff called Cannabinoids (CBD). Did you know, there has been a US Government patent on the use of cannabinoids? Since October 7, 2003, the US government issued Patent No. 6,630,507. Look it up. It’s for real. The patent discusses the use of cannabinoids as a high end anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotectant.
US Patent 6,630,507 Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants
Abstract: Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH..3, and COCH.sub.3.”
Now, be aware, as a medical practitioner and a parent, I am not necessarily promoting Pot or Marijuana. I do feel, however, as the medical research continues, it will be made legal in all states. I also feel it should be regulated much like alcohol. There has been excellent research for over 20 years, originally coming out of Israel by a Dr. Mechoulam: “Dr. Mechoulam is a pioneer in the field of cannabis research and a discoverer of the endocannabinoid system. Dr. Mechoulam is an Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.” Please Google this.
What is the endocannabinoid system? The simple word is that every cell in our body has a receptor site for CBD. Unfortunately, the last time anybody got natural CBD was if your Mom breast fed you. Yes, breast milk has CBD in it. Cannabinoids have many health benefits that I will go into more detail in future article. Remember, the US Government patent itself describes the actions. It has an anti-inflammatory regulatory action, via multiple physiologic pathways. It has an antioxidant action, again through multiple physiologic pathways. It also has complex neuroprotective actions.
I find it interesting, as per the US FDA DSHEA laws, that it is illegal to say that a supplement can treat a disease. However their own patent lists disease processes that CBD may help. Go figure.
Now, did you know that there is more than one cannabis plant? Yes, certain plants can have small amounts of CBD in them; however, there is another cannabis plant. That plant is Hemp. No, hemp is not the female form of marijuana. Much like there can be multiple mint plants—peppermint, spearmint, and wintergreen. However, they are not the SAME plant; just in the same family. The “pot” plant has historically been grown to have high amounts of THC/Tetrahydrocannabinol. This is the cannabinoid that makes your “brain walk away.” It also has multiple medical benefits of its own. Now companies are growing pot plants that are lower in THC and higher in CBD. The other cannabinoids do not make you high or have mind altering effects; they can lower the effect of THC. This is the medical pot that’s now being grown for children with seizures (Charlotte’s Web, for example).
Note, not everybody can afford to have the mind-altering effects of THC. Medical professionals, people driving heavy machinery, and elderly patients who are already a fall risk are just some.
This is when I recommend people look into organic hemp CBD. The hemp plant by nature is naturally very high in CBD and very low in THC. One cannot get high on hemp CBD. One cannot generally test positive on hemp CBD, where one can test positive with medical marijuana. I also recommend people do their own research on medical marijuana and hemp CBD. Let your fingers do the walking on Google, but make sure you also put in the search bar “NIH” for the National Institute of Health. This allows you to see the actual research being done while minimizing the infomercials trying to sell you product.
I will be writing more on this one topic. I feel it is important to get this information out of the shadows and share it with those that need it most.
